How Do You Decide What to Buy for Your Baby?

Here’s my problem with the baby care industry: it’s an industry.

It takes what is already a stressful transition in life – welcoming a new life into your world, readjusting all of your personal relationships, adapting your life from the one to which you were accustomed – and tells you: IF THAT WASN’T ENOUGH, YOU NEED TO WORRY ABOUT THIS!

  • Did you get the right kind of diapers? Cloth? Disposable? Are they the kind with the stripe to let you know when it’s soiled or are you going to let your child sit in filth?

  • Do you have the right toys? Do you have enough toys? Do you have too many toys?

  • What about bedding? Did you get the right kind of bedding? Don’t you know you need to spend at least this much to get the crib your baby needs?

  • What about bottles?  Did you get the right kind of bottle?  You know there are only two or three good bottles out there, right?  Did you make sure you got one of those?

And those are just the babycare essentials! Don’t get me started on the long lists of items companies will tell you that you need!

None of it is personal, all of it is marketing, and it is pervasive. How are parents supposed to navigate through the noise? Because some things are necessary and no one wants to throw the baby out with the bathwater, but how are parents supposed to make sense of it all?

The babycare industry takes a meaningful, personal life decision and makes it about the accumulation of the “right” material items.

From my perspective, I’m tempted to yell “ENOUGH ALREADY!”

I want to help you cut through the frenzy. I want to work with you to find what you – you as a person, individual that you are – need for your baby that works in your (not someone else’s) life.

Because yes, you could spend $10 on a Frida Baby “Control the Flow Rinser” to help you bathe your baby… or you could grab a disposable cup you have left over from your last party. One is not better than the other because if your anxiety is high over bathing your child and you want to ensure that you don’t accidentally pour all the water in their face, the Frida Baby rinser is perfect for you! If you don’t have the money or don’t want to spend the money, a disposable cup doesn’t make you any less of a loving, conscientious parent!

I love discussion - I think it’s far preferable to being lectured, so share with me:

  • What are your questions about what you need for your baby?

  • Are there specific items you wonder about?

  • Do you have concerns about where to buy your items?

  • Are you unsure of where to begin?

Let me know in the comments!

Consider this a judgment-free zone.

So, together let’s find what works just for you – not people who are only similar you.  Your parenting journey deserves to be as unique as you.
